Define the question before measuring
A wet mark can come from liquid water, vapor transport or both; the repair path depends on which transport mode is active.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Record the trigger and first visible change
- Compare nearby reference surfaces
- Note whether the edge spreads, beads or dries uniformly
Compare supporting and weakening evidence

- Visible flow lines or a sharp event link
- A repeatable humidity and surface-temperature relationship
- A directional path through a joint or cavity
Weakens the pathway
- No change during the suspected trigger
- The mark is isolated between glazing panes
- Readings remain stable across comparable conditions
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.

Opening concealed construction or applying membranes should wait until the transport mode and drying direction are understood.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
