Define the question before measuring
Crack width matters, but offset, rotation, location and change over time can be more important than a single measurement.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.

- Measure fixed points
- Record nearby functional changes
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Width or offset changes
- Doors and windows distort nearby
- Several cracks form a coherent pattern
Weakens the pathway
- The crack is stable and finish-only
- No displacement exists
- The line follows a known board joint
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Rapid change, structural displacement or unsafe elements requires prompt structural assessment.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
