Define the question before measuring
A material can remain wet after the source stops when vapor-resistant layers, low airflow or cool temperatures restrict drying.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Track the same points over time
- Record temperature and relative humidity with each reading
- Compare covered and exposed areas where safe
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Readings plateau after the source is controlled
- One side is covered by a low-permeance layer
- Warmer or ventilated reference areas dry faster
Weakens the pathway
- The reading rises only during new water events
- The material was dry before the finish was installed
- Instrument response is inconsistent at reference points
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Do not close, paint or encapsulate an assembly solely because the surface looks dry.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
