Define the question before measuring
A measurement becomes more useful when compared with a known dry, stable or unaffected reference taken the same way.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.

- Choose at least one unaffected nearby point
- Photograph probe or sensor position
- Record instrument, mode and conditions
Compare supporting and weakening evidence

- Reference and target are comparable materials
- Method and position are repeated
- The difference persists over time
Weakens the pathway
- Different materials are compared directly
- Sensor placement changes
- Only one isolated reading exists
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Do not use a single consumer reading to certify hidden damage, safety or repair completion.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
