Define the question before measuring
Condensation risk depends on whether a surface is cold enough for the surrounding air, not on relative humidity alone.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Record air temperature, relative humidity and surface temperature together
- Compare center and edge temperatures
- Repeat at the same time of day
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Surface temperature approaches or falls below dew point
- Water forms first at the coldest edge
- Lower humidity or warmer surface reduces the symptom
Weakens the pathway
- Water appears during rain regardless of temperature
- The moisture is between glazing panes
- A plumbing event reproduces it
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.

Consumer measurements are screening evidence; persistent concealed condensation needs building-envelope assessment.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
