Window water management: face seal versus drainage plane
Mark the first wet edge around the opening and compare wind direction, sill drainage, head flashing and the wall drainage plane.
Separate the routes before choosing a repair.
Fresh sealant over the exterior joint does not repair a missing flashing sequence behind the cladding.

What happened first?
Record evidence for and against each route.
Failed flashing or reverse lap
Water reaches the opening and is directed behind the window or wall layer by an incorrect lap.
Blocked or missing sill drainage
Water enters the window system but cannot drain safely back to the exterior.
Interior surface condensation
Indoor humidity condenses on a cold frame or glass edge without rain crossing the wall.
Change one condition at a time.
Is the first water on the room-side surface or emerging from behind trim?
Yes: Surface wetting favors condensation; concealed emergence favors a wall or window drainage defect.
No: Repeat the observation during a controlled weather event and mark the first edge.
Does wind direction change the severity?
Yes: Prioritize head, jamb and cladding transitions exposed to that direction.
No: Check sill drainage, duration effects and indoor humidity.
Stop rather than create a better clue.
- Do not remove cladding or window units without a weatherproofing plan.
- Stop destructive testing where lead paint, asbestos or structural damage may be present.
