Do not chip ice with tools that can damage roofing or work beneath falling ice.

Snow cover, subfreezing eaves and warming roof areas.
4. Compare, do not assume

- The leak appears during thaw or sunny cold days
- Attic insulation or air leakage defects are nearby

- The same leak occurs in warm rain
- No snow or ice is present
- The interior mark tracks a plumbing line
5. Repeat only safe checks
- Document roof snow and eave ice from the ground
- Record attic temperature and visible frost safely
- Compare affected and unaffected roof sections
6. Decide the next step
If the pattern is active, expanding, safety-related or requires opening inaccessible construction, stop self-help testing and prepare an evidence-based handoff. A roofer and insulation or air-sealing specialist may both be needed because drainage and heat-loss pathways can interact.
7. Verify the outcome
After any action, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger. A dry surface immediately after work is not sufficient proof when the original symptom was intermittent.
