Shower leak paths: splash, drain, supply and waterproofing
Separate four overlapping shower-related routes by changing one operating condition at a time.

Contained wet area
Surface water reaches the drain while the waterproofing layer turns up at walls and protects the structure.
Bypass around the wet-area boundary
Water can escape at a door, failed drain connection, supply fitting or waterproofing transition.
Watch the conditions
Leak timing during spray, standing water and fixture use is the strongest separator.
Do not assume
A wet ceiling below the shower does not identify whether the drain, supply or waterproofing failed.
Look for
- Leak only when spray hits one wall
- Leak after drain is filled
- Leak with valve on but drain plugged
Keep competing explanations alive.
Change one condition at a time: supply pressure, drain loading, spray location and standing water. Record the delay to the first leak.
Pressurized supply or valve leak
A fitting or supply route leaks while the valve is open, even when water does not reach the drain.
- Leaks with drain plugged and spray contained
- Starts quickly when valve opens
- May continue while pressure remains
- Only leaks after prolonged drain loading
Drain body or waste connection leak
Water escapes when the drain or trap receives flow or standing water.
- Leaks when water is poured directly into drain
- Delay follows drain loading
- Spray location does not matter
- Leaks before water reaches the drain
Waterproofing transition or splash escape
Water crosses a wall, curb, door or penetration boundary during spray exposure.
- Depends on spray direction or duration
- Appears at curb or wall transition
- Drain-only test stays dry
- Leaks with supply on and no surface wetting

Each answer changes the investigation order. It does not prove a hidden condition by itself.
Does the leak occur with the valve on while water is captured before it reaches surfaces and drain?
If yes: Move pressurized supply components to the front.
If no: Separate drain loading from spray exposure.
Does a drain-only test reproduce the leak?
If yes: Prioritize drain body, trap and waste connections.
If no: Map spray direction, curb and waterproofing transitions.
